William Ford Robinson Stanley, oltre che un importante architetto e ingegnere fu un importante inventore britannico che progettò con la sua società `Ltd William Ford Stanley e Co. vari strumenti matematici di precisione come telescopi e tacheometri: depositò quasi 80 brevetti.Noto filantropo, negli ultimi 15 anni della sua vita versò £.80.000 per vari progetti educativi e quando morì, nel 1909 a 80 anni (nacque nel 1829), lasciò una delle sue case da adibire ad orfanotrofio oltre alla maggior parte del suo patrimonio stimato allora a £.60.000 a scuole commerciali per aiutare gli studenti del sud di londra.William Stanley fu membro della Royal Society of Arts, della Royal Meteorological Society, della Royal Astronomical Society e della British Astronomical Association.Non solo, ma oltre a tutte queste attività era un musicista, pittore e fotografo oltre ad autore di parecchie pubblicazioni tra cui giochi, libri per bambini e trattati politici
